While you slept on 12/21/12

While You Slept

A Comic of Earthly Proportion!

I originally opened the Neon Neuron website as a flash-site, until I became aware of the limitations of a flash only website. This was a comic I released for the the flash only. It's now hosted at my DeviantArt page.
This is a silly story on why the world didn't end on 12/21/13 or any other dooms day, for that matter.
Keeping Earth safe is no easy task, what with all the dangers floating around space and making trouble for everyone: Aliens, dopplegangers and asteroids. How is a Neuron to get any rest?

Construction Time Again

Construction Time Again

Okay, There are all kinds of wrong going on in this image. I know this because it was pointed out to me by the guys on PencilJack

I would Like to take a moment and give a shout-out to PencilJack and P-Jackers. If you need help with a piece you are working on, need some outside eyes or encouragement, PencilJack is the place to go.

The perspective is on two different planes; Neon Engine being on one and the Custodian on another.  And, I was talking about about contrast in the last post, but, maybe this is too much contrast.
I don't even know why I posted this.
Anyway...Pencil Jack. Check it out!

A Hard Day's Night...

The Custodian.

There could have been more contrast in this image. The strongest points right now are all the bright colored areas; the shirt, sleeves, soles and the obnoxiously yellow wall. Oh, and his hair. The other colors are really flat. The blue jeans and red jacket are probably the same value. Blegh! Very boring.
Things could easily become more interesting just by adjusting the contrast and saturation. I mean, just look at the space background. Very cosmic! Even the Custodian (who has obviously undergone some extreme aging) seems to pop against the darkness around his head.

Now if we take a look at a grayscale of the image, below, we see how boring things really are even when the saturation was given a little bump. There is just to much gray in or near the same values. This picture needs a major overhaul. Balance comes to mind. Perfect balance.

Custodians Log 004.00

Custodian Log:004.0

Update:

Oh-Ho! What have we here?
My first attempt to try and color! And, Well, it could've been worse, right?
This was a long process. As you can probably tell, the palette is a simple one: red, yellow and blue.
The lighting, a hard one. It's supposed to be ambient lighting, but, if you look at the direction of the shadows, the light seems to be coming from some of page light source. Which is totally evident in the first panel; where the Engines lighting source is off to the left of the page, and the last panel, which is the same.
The chains could've been brighter to help them pop off the page page. As it stands now, It's all kind of flat. Oh well. Crash and Burn; live and learn.

Custodians Log 003.00

Custodian Log:003.0

Update:

This was the third page for the intro comic to the Neon Neuron website. Not much to say about this one. I think it's okay. Using the chains as framing elements is still in the works. Or, I have no idea what I'm doing if you want to be a jerk about it.
I was playing with speech and timing with this page. Using bubbles to separate the words was supposed to slow things down and give a sense of confusion. Let you in on the mood that the Custodian was feeling.
I think, now, that the chains have too much a prominent role in the visuals right now, add their ambiguity and the whole thing just gets a bit confusing. When I go back and finish this story, I'll make the chains a tad more subtle by fading them or using thinner lines.
I do like the way the Custodian seems to be looking back up at the still broken Engine from the bottom of the page.

Custodian Log:002.0

Custodian Log:002.0

Update:

This was the second comic done as an introduction to the Neon Neuron website.
Two panels...Two whole panels. There was really more to it, but, once again under time constraints I cut a full page down to two panels. It was a really interesting exercise in hindsight, taking five panels and cutting it down to two. These were the two most relevant panels on the page and funny enough, were pretty much all that was needed to get the point across.
I won't say I'm a fan of compressed story telling, I much prefer decompression. I like being able to portray nuances in moods, feelings and actions.  The old say goes, "...the thing about subtlety is, nobody notices." I like to think subtlety is there for a more observant viewer. The person looking behind the curtain, or peering down the rabbit whole. The "Custodians Log:002.0" is a very poor example of this.
     Yeah...I'm pretty ashamed about it.

Neon Neuron: The blog! Web-comic now showing

Neon Neuron Blog Comic!

Update:

This comic was a test run for the NeonNeuron website. It was meant to be released while the website was under construction and help introduce everyone to Neuronaea (not to be confused with Neuronia).
As you will see in the following posts, it was still in it's infancy and mostly an experiment in sequential narrative and character study. I attempted to release it on a weekly basis, but, due to time constraints I was unable to complete it in time for the launch of the website.
At this point the main character was the Custodian. He is in charge of keeping the multiple universe in balance. As the tale progressed and more comics were set be released, his story, as well as the stories of others in the Neuronaea, would unfold.
Right now, it's all back on the drawing table for tweaking and refining.
"Through the fire and the flames we carry on!"
